Todd County was looking for revenge over Little Wound for an early season football loss as the two schools battled Tuesday afternoon to see who would advance in the 11A football playoffs.
It came down to an extra point miss as Little Wound converted one extra point try while Todd County missed both and the Mustangs escaped the first round with a 13-12 win.
Todd County coach Bob Kornely Jr., told his assistants they were going to score on the kickoff just prior to Little Wound putting the ball on the Tee and Austin Colombe made his prediction hold up as he ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the game, sparking the Falcons early. The kick after was no good, making it 6-0.
Todd County scored again with 4:19 to play in the first quarter and again the kick was no good, putting the Falcons on top 12-0 with all the momentum.
Little Wound answered back on a three yard plunge by Anthony Hopkins and Trevor Brave Bird kicked the extra point through to make it 12-7.
With just 16 seconds to go in the half, Kevin Hunter scored for Little Wound, but the kick after failed. Little Wound then short kicked the ball to avoid a run back and Todd County did not cover it and the Mustangs took possession at mid-field with 12 seconds to play.
The Falcons defense shut them down, ending the half at 13-12.
Both teams struggled to move the ball much in the second half. Todd County needed a stop late in the fourth and their defense did the job, shutting down Little Wound on a fourth and one to get one last chance to score.
The moderate winds made passing difficult and the Falcons were forced to try to pass, resulting in an interception that shut the door on their offense and Little Wound pulled out a tough one, 13-12.
Little Wound advances to the second round to play Harrisburg on the road Monday, Nov. 1.
