Over 30 people joined the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society for last week’s National Day of Unity Walk from IHS to the Tribal Building to raise awareness on Domestic Violence.
WBCWS Board of Directors member Pixie Wilson shared her thoughts prior to the walk.
“Domestic Violence is an epidemic on the Rosebud Reservation where one in three Native women will experience violence at some point in their lifetime,” said Wilson.
Bernadine Waln offered an opening prayer
The walk stopped at the Courthouse and Police Department where Calvin ‘Hawkeye’ Waln shared a few words on how crucial and significant the advocate’s services are to victims of Domestic Violence.  Judge Steve Emery said the work the Domestic Violence advocates do makes a tremendous difference for victims during their healing process.
The final stop prior to the Tribal Building was Spotted Tail Cemetery where a wreath of flowers and some sage were left to honor those that have been lost to Domestic Violence.
“Thank you for your attendance and support of this issue,” said WBCWS Executive Director Nichole Emery.”
Wopila Bad Hand sang an honor song to commemorate those that have lost their lives or been affected by Domestic Violence.
The walk finished at the Tribal Building where Tribal President Rodney Bordeaux offered his thoughts.
“The RST President’s Office and Administration are in support of the efforts of the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society,” said Bordeaux.   The RST President thanked the staff and advocates for the work they do and offered his future support in the efforts to end violence against women on the Rosebud Reservation.
A meal of chicken soup and sandwiches was served for those in attendance.
