The Rosebud Fire Department has been working hard to preserve one of our most valuable resources: the land.
Since 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, the Rosebud Fire Department has been on the go putting out fires. The first fire was south of Mission and burnt 87 acres.
Marshall “Hoss” Pearman said, “While fire fighters were still working on the first fire, the Valandra Bridge Incident started at 3 p.m. and the department went straight from the first fire to the Valandra Bridge incident.”
Rosebud crew number 1 worked all night long digging line until relief came Sept. 27 at 1 p.m., when the Pine Ridge Crew number one took over.
The exhausted Rosebud crew number 1 returned to the fire hall and went to sleep in the garage.
The origin of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
As of 3 p.m. on Sept. 27, the Valandra incident burnt 100-plus acres.
The Pine Ridge, Lower Brule, Standing Rock and Winnebago Agencies all sent resources to assist our RST Fire Fighters. A saw team from the Yankton Sioux arrived to cut and slash. Engines arrived from Lower Brule, Standing Rock, Winnebago. Local Volunteer fire departments lending assistance were; Valentine, Cody, Vetal, White River, Kilgore and Mission.
Other resources were a helicopter and the plane which was dropping slurry.
Chad Boyd, Heavy Equipment Operator, said “the fire index is very high.”
Due to the high index, the Rosebud Fire Department would like to remind the public and to use extreme caution in order to prevent wildfires.
