A wildland fire east of Mission swept through 537 acres and brought out firefighters from eight crews and a helicopter before it could be contained on Friday evening.
Crews from Mission, Wood, White River, Rosebud, Parmelee, Crow Agency Interagency Helicopter, Standing Rock, Winnebago and Yankton Sioux Fire Departments worked together to stop the fire.
According to Marshall Pierman of the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Fire Department, the fire was started by a vehicle accident – a car rolled and hit the bottom of a creek bed. Authorities are still investigating.
Tribal and private lands were damaged in the fire, but no structures and no people were injured.
According to one landowner, Gail Krogman, BIA Firefighters stayed through the night, as did many neighbors.
“There was just a lot of people there helping,” Krogman sad.
Friday’s winds and the current high fire index created the perfect conditions for the fire, officials say.
According to RST Firefighters, the fire index is still very high and people should be extremely cautious in order to prevent further wildland fires.
Note: The Wood volunteer fire crew also responded to the Valandra Bridge Fire Incident.
