Celebration Day for TCMS Students: Students Complete Dakota S.T.E.P. Testing

Posted Local at Apr 13, 2011

Students celebrated having completed the Dakota S.T.E.P. Test also known as the South Dakota Test of Educational Progress. Teachers held a incentive for the students on  Fri. 8, 2011 with open gym of basketball, volleyball, and playing Wii. The students also got to enjoy movies with popcorn, candy, pizza and soda.

The S.T.E.P. program is mandatory for all students between the grades of 3rd through 8th and also 11th. Students who are state-placed or district-placed must be included in the State of South Dakota Accountability Plan for the No Child Left Behind Act. According to N.C.L.B. Act & S.D.S.C.L. 13-3-55, schools are required to show improvement each year in student proficiency levels that are defined by South Dakota Content Standards of reading, math, and science.

Schools have to monitor they’re (AYP) Adequate Yearly Progress, and at least 95% of students need to participate. This year at T.C.M.S. out of 342 students 7 were absent due to either transfer or home schooled and had to test at a later date. Testing Coordinator  Jenny Kornely commented.

“We appreciate the family’s effort on getting the children in on testing days. I think our teachers put in a lot of effort to ensure our students made great progress.”

At the end of the testing Jenny Kornely and others are getting the students scores put together to send out for the students final scores, which will be released at a later date.
