At Thursday’s July 14 council meeting RST President Rodney Bordeaux presented Tribal member Marian Sorace with a plaque honoring her 20 years of service for the IHS hospital and the communities.

Marian Sorace began her long career at the Rosebud IHS hospital in 1991. Her generous nature not only shows in her work but also extends to her community and fellow tribal members. In 1992 she founded the Rosebud Soup Kitchen, which she used to feed homeless people as well as poor families. She provided nutritional meals and a safe environment for everyone who came to eat.

This is not the first time that Marian has received recognition for her work. She received the Jefferson Award in 1995, which was presented by Gov. Bill Janklow. Then in 1997 she was honored for her outstanding work by the National Congress of American Indians, The Sicangu Elderly and The RST Tribe. In 2007 she received the Aberdeen Area Directors Award for Personal Service.

On Wednesday June 29 Marian was presented with an IHS Director’s Award for Customer Service. Dr. Yvette Roubideaux presented Sorace with her award at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.

Sorace’s family fed the Tribal Council before the award presentation to show their appreciation. The RST tribe recognizes the hard work Sorace has done over the years as they presented her with an award and a quilt. The RST President also declared the day as “Marian Sorace Day”.
